Meet a few of the BW&A tutors

  • Harry

After studying A levels in history, politics, philosohy and physics, Harry graduated from Oxford University with a degree in theology in 2009. He then studied as a professional jazz musician at Trinity College of Music, graduating with a master's in music in 2012. It was as a saxophone teacher that Harry began his journey as a tutor, quickly moving into a career tutoring the humanities, maths, and school entrance exams six days a week.

In order to consolidate and augment his teaching skills, Harry took a PGCE while teaching religious studies at two schools in south west London: Richmond Park Academy, and St John Bosco College. During this year, Harry had formal training for work with SEN students. After this year working in the classroom, Harry returned to tutoring full time, while continuing to enjoy life as a jazz saxophone player in his spare time.

Harry has tutored hundreds of students studying for examinations in history, politics, religious studies, philosophy, maths, and English, of many different ages and backgrounds, from 10 year olds working towards the 11 plus exam, to GCSE and A level students, to Oxbridge entry for PPE, theology, history, and philosophy, to students retaking A levels after leaving school, and adult learners working on university dissertations. Harry works with 16 to 18 year olds more than any other age group, and is particularly experienced in helping students make the great leap from GCSE level short question writing to rigourous university level essay writing.

Harry also has extensive, daily experience homeschooling students of myriad backgrounds over the previous ten years. Harry most enjoys drawing out the connections between the subjects he teaches, helping students move towards a broad literacy and passion for intellectual discovery that undergirds a life long love of learning, far beyond the mere prologue that is formal schooling.

  • Matthew

I am a professional tutor with six years experience. I teach English Language and Literature, 7+ to A Level. In person, and online.

I have taught for several top agencies across London, building relationships, boosting grades, and pushing my students to achieve their goals.

A tutor is only as good as their personality. I know how to build rapport with my students, growing their confidence and deepening their knowledge of the subject and examination. Whether it’s last minute or long term, I get results.

I became a tutor because I’ve always known that you can’t really tell students anything: you can only show them.

You can show them what curiosity for weird words looks like, what enthusiasm for strange books looks like, what success at school looks like.

I'm a mentor too, with experience guiding neuro-divergent students towards success. I care for the well-being of my students, making sure they feel good, healthy, and positive about life and learning.

When I'm not teaching, I'm filmmaking. The skills required of a great tutor - empathy, clarity, and authority - are the same as those required of a successful writer-director.

  • James

After English degrees at Warwick and Oxford, I tutored and wrote freelance for a year before teaching English full-time at UK secondary schools. I spent most of that time at Radley College (2016-23), a prestigious boarding school outside Oxford. I was a deputy housemaster there for four years and was Director of University Entrance 2019-23, in which role I personally checked and sent over 800 UCAS applications for a wide variety of courses and destinations. All this experience has made me well-placed to help students with all English requirements from 11+ to undergraduate level and to advise on all aspects of UK university applications.

I left the classroom in 2023 to do something more flexible and creative - I am now based in London and tutoring a large number of hours each month alongside pursuing my other interests in voiceover, acting and comedy writing.

  • Hilary

Since graduating from The University of Edinburgh in 2001 with PGCE (PrimEd distinction), I have enjoyed a very happy career working in top class preparatory schools and I have been both Head of Maths and Head of English. A huge part of my role was preparing pupils for 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance exams, scholarships and bespoke senior school examinations. I am also an interview skills specialist.

During my teaching career, I was seconded to the SQA to monitor standards in Scottish education and I was also a numeracy leader which meant that I delivered professional development courses across the region. I also trained student teachers and monitored probationers and received professional recognition from the GTC twice.

Since moving solely to online tutoring 5 years ago, I have thoroughly enjoyed preparing children for entrance examinations to top-class senior schools including Eton, Harrow and Winchester with great success. I am adept at teaching VR, NVR and ISEB. I also enjoy providing general revision and support in English and Maths.

I use rigorous assessment in my lessons to tap into any weaknesses then I scaffold, support and challenge pupils in a nurturing environment so that they may teach their full potential. Over the years, I have developed extremely positive relationships with parents and children alike and I have a stream of positive reviews to support this.
